The YMCA of Greater New York is the largest youth-service organization in NYC. The organization has grown to encompass 19 branches and more than 150 sites throughout the five boroughs of New York City in addition to three camp sites and an upstate conference center.
The Harlem YMCA is seeking an experienced applicant who, under the direct supervision of the Director, Health & Wellness and/or Director, Aquatics, will display outstanding customer service, demonstrate YMCA Values and have an understanding of the YMCA Mission. The Water Fitness Instructor will also conduct safe, fun, dynamic and effective water fitness classes based on the YMCA of Greater New York’s Health & Wellness/Aquatic Safety Standards & Guidelines.
Responsibilities:
• Provide a high degree of member service through a professional relationship with the members in regards to their needs, concerns, and questions about the YMCA, its programs and mission.
• Have a thorough knowledge of branch emergency procedures and take appropriate action for Aquatic Department emergency situations.
• Incorporate different types of equipment/choreography and demonstrate exercises to members.
• Modify classes and routines according to the fitness level of class participants.
• Attend training opportunities necessary for the position.
• Maintain required personal certifications.
• Awareness of current Health & Wellness/Aquatics programs and trends.
• Notify supervisor and find appropriate coverage for class due to illness or emergency.
• Responsible for being on time and in uniform (swim suit, ID, etc.) for all scheduled classes.
• Notify supervisor of any damaged equipment in need of repairs.
• Demonstrate ability to relate to and work with people of diverse backgrounds.
• Work cooperatively with professional staff and other departments.
• Knowledge of anatomy and physiology and their relationship to the development of water fitness instruction.
• Adherence to the YMCA of Greater New York’s Health & Wellness/Aquatic Safety Standards & Guidelines.
Qualifications:
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Current CPR/First Aid Certifications.
• YMCA Swim Lesson, Water Safety Instructor Certification or equivalent; aqua aerobics certification is a plus.
• Strong customer Service and communications skills.
